use your powers for good

Image

speak love. speak with kindness. speak things that lift people up.

speak what you would want to hear.

words are so powerful.

writers have to beware. i know this because i’m a writer.

we have the power to evoke emotion with our words, and those of us who do this for a living, have to be so very careful. we can hurt someone swiftly with the wrong words. and we know how to use them.

if you are a writer… use your powers for good.

don’t use your words to harm. it’s mean. and doesn’t make anyone feel better.

the speaker or the listener. the writer or the reader.

make every word worth hearing or reading.

tell people you love them. love does.

what’s in the word bubble over your head?

i love a new venue

when my friend alisha said she would fill in on a writer’s round… she didn’t realize it was in monteagle… Image

i’m so glad i didn’t know.

because we decided to go, before we knew how long it would take. (it was only 1.5 hours).

we got to have a little girl-chatting, belly-laughing, song-singing mini- girl trip by accident.

it was so fun…

then we got there. WOW. what a place! the smokehouse goes on FOREVER… it is charming, enchanting, special, preserved, and accessible… you should go. there are local products, country flavored items, a delicious raspberry barbque sauce. then, in the restaurant is this wonderful stage, wrapped with antique instruments and candles. what an experience!

and alisha got to sing 5 songs. i love her stories and her voice. so i love getting to hear her sing live. and people always really dig it, which is fun. i got to see her do what she loves to do, which is such a moment…

then we got to drive home and relive the whole thing.

there’s so much good about it. i think i’ll have to just write a song about it.

i don’t even know how.

vbs logo

vbs logo

BEWARE: ABOUT TO TYPE THE MOST BORING SENTENCE EVER…

i don’t even know how to start talking about VBS.

I used to think VBS was the same old same old, and everyone did something they had done a million times. noah. creation.moses.joseph.

then… i started working at Long Hollow.

I would actually be planning our own VBS for kids.

WOW. Mind blowing. Determined to make sure everything taught is worthy of their time, and ours… I think about this time of year, all year. I pray, read, listen, draw, write… and most importantly collaborate with people that I treasure and adore (jason underhill, emmy hendrick and sharon fleming).

This week, I told the kids that I’ve been thinking about them and praying for them for months. It’s true. True story.

We have been looking for the best ways to help them understand how great God’s love for them is… and that if they know Him, it’s their job to tell others. This is Biblical.

I can’t begin to share all of the amazing things God has allowed me to participate in this past week… because I think you’ll probably stop reading at some point, but there are some major highlights i want to share. because they are awesome. And because I want to trap them somewhere before I forget.

Here we go…

1 – literally thousands of kids have journeyed with us this week. almost 200 made eternal decisions.

2 – the worship leaders on each of our campuses KILLED IT!!!! I deeply love it when amazing musicians and singers commit their time to kids. Kids deserve excellence, not mediocrity. And boy did they get it this week!

Hendersonville: Ben Eggebrecht, Colin Henderson, Beau Hoffman and Niko Xidas; Hillcrest: Warren David and Foster Loven; Gallatin: Mike Hurst; Springfield: Brad Damas; Madison: Ben Eggebrecht, Wes Pickering

3 – we got to teach about mephibosheth. YES! David rescued him when he was powerless to help himself because of his love for his family. Jesus rescues us when we are powerless to help ourselves.

4 – teachers brought the truth to kids. the gospel was unashamedly proclaimed and it will defend itself.

5 – our video series was awesome, and jackson, emmy and beau were amazing.

6 – family night… SO MANY PEOPLE. SO MUCH WORSHIP.

7 – we got to teach “God loves you no matter what!” when we taught the thief on the cross story. he did not have time to do any good deeds, after meeting Christ. That means that there was nothing about HIM that saved Him, only Christ. (what a relief, right?!)

I’m totally getting excessive with the capitals and exclamation points.

i’m overflowing, drinking from the saucer. grateful.

jeff lovingood – thanks for supporting lhkidz and giving your guidance, wisdom and influence to this amazing experience we just had.

jason underhill  - thanks for partnering with me to bring the truth to kids… your support and encouragement are crucial in the creative process. i’m grateful for your commitment to excellence.

emmy hendrick – thanks for dreaming and planning, and replanning with me. acting, serving, and doing VBS in Gallatin like a boss. you blow my mind.

sharon fleming – thanks so much for “holding down the fort” while i was looking for an assistant. your kindness is palpable. your love for kids is beautiful. you manage details like a boss!

beau hoffman – thanks for… 1 – acting in the videos, 2 – editing the videos, 3 – making the music videos for EVERY campus, 4 – playing the bass with the band, 5 – teching and/or playing the cajon in the evening at hillcrest, 6 – teaching me about patience

eli spiller – thanks for teaching, hanging posters, making phone calls, dealing with fellowship one, loving kids, serving joyfully… and more

jordan dennis – thanks for loving the madison campus, and praying and preparing to serve with them; thanks for making phone calls, entering stuff in the computer… and more

steven – thanks for rolling with us, loving kids, killing it on kickball, doing everything you were ever presented with

and so much more…. may have to do a second post. i’m about to cry at this point.

i hope you get as stoked as i do about doing something that points to Jesus, with people you adore.

my teenagers taught me something again…

pokemon boystonite i had a house full of teenagers.

jackson had a few friends. (freshmen)

quint had a few friends. (juniors)

as quint and his friends were leaving, i heard a symphony of “love you’s” going back and forth among the groups.

i can’t seem to capture in words how much joy this brings me. first of all, because they have these people in their daily lives that they love so much and love them back.

most of all, because WHO DOES THAT? i can’t imagine that this is a common thing. and it wasn’t the first time. i am so grateful that they have the comfort and confidence in themselves and in their relationships that they are willing to put themselves out there, time and time again.

they have created an environment where love is part of their vernacular. and even better, they don’t just say it, they do it. you can tell that they enjoy each other, they have fun together.

grown ups… learn something from this example. learn to say the things that people need to hear and need to know. don’t assume that people know that they matter to you – tell them.

are you as good at this as my teenagers? i don’t know about you, but i’m gonna take a page out of their playbook…

love you.

thanking God for pain and David Edmonson

Imagemy great friend david edmonson took this photo a few years ago. i had designed the shirts and needed some shots… then we got this one at the end.

my friend is a warrior of faith. he has been a mentor and friend for about 10 years now. today he imparted some of the best wisdom he has ever shared with me… and over the years he has shared alot.

he taught me that a smile is found in the eyes.

he taught me to under promise and over deliver.

he taught me to be generous with my gifts and talents, by his neverending example of the same.

he taught me to show Jesus in my art.

he has taught me so much more… but today, takes the cake.

today he told me that when things are hard, God is teaching me, wanting me to become more Christlike. He reminded me to be grateful when there are trials because they allow me to learn and become more godly. He told me that you don’t want to have to repeat the lesson, you have to learn it. He told me to be grateful for the lessons. He reminded me what love is. He told me that Paul wrote most of his letters from prison… not the mountaintop.

I hope this encourages you, whatever pain you might be walking through, as it encourages me.

this year, my friend has experienced extreme pain and loss. He endured a life-threatening stroke. He has been forced to slow down, relearn the use of certain muscles. This year, he lost his oldest daughter. This year, he has continued to teach photographers all over the world. he has continued to win photography award after award. This year he walked his talk.

When I grow up, I want to be more like David Edmonson… and more like Christ. He taught me that. And I’m forever grateful.

you spin me round round

in a full circle moment this week – i wrote a song with a friend from high school.

robyn blaikie collins and julie foresteri love when that happens.

i love when you have a hisotry with someone (even if it was just a moment) and then God gives them back to you.

Julie Forester is a singer/songwriter here in Nashville. I’ve been to several of her shows over the past few years, and her voice is still as stunning as it was when I knew her first. It was a blessing to hear her singing the song we wrote. Now, we just wait and see if anyone chooses to cut it….

another insane moment: i was writing with Alexis Slifer monday night around 8. I’ve known Alexis for about 5 years, but this is the first time talked about writing together.

as we decided what to sing, praying and reading some scripture… i was reminded of a piece of music and lyrics that God had given me couple of months ago. I sang them for her, and she just looked at me. Then proceeded to tell me that God had given her the same tune and simliar lyrics two weeks before. CRAZY!!!!!

So we had our chorus, we had some affirmation that we were supposed to be writing this song, and so we wrote.

I love it.

is there anyone that God has given back to you that you just want to thank Him for?

the surprising appeal of #vintagejesus

1960 print of Jesus.

1960 print of Jesus.

arguably the most recognizable painting of Jesus ever…

i found it in a discard pile yesterday and snatched it up!

on the back it says “the reapers class” merry christmas. december 25, 1960.

i’m pretty sure this is the Jesus that was on Good Times… can anyone confirm this?

in the meantime – i have gotten so many comments and likes and messages.

apparently this photo conjures up a lot of emotion. people remember this. many still have this picture hanging in their homes (or grandparents’ homes).

i got a message on facebook from my middle school hand bell teacher, glenda pogue

i thought you might be interested.

she said this: Robyn, this picture, “Head of Christ” was painted by Warner Sallman in 1941 (his first). I have always loved his paintings. He also painted “Christ at Heart’s Door”, “The Lord is My Shepherd” and “Christ in Gethsemane” and more. I’m sure you already knew this.

For the record… I had no idea!

what are some other things from our past remind us of Jesus?

what i learned today from my 16 year old

just run behind me, he said.

just run behind me, he said.

took my kids to the park today after work, so they could play. who knew that my teenager would teach me a lesson…

this is what happened: after some lovely bickering through the kfc drive thru, we finally got to the park. Before long they had decided to play a game of tackle football. i tried to make them play touch football. they laughed at me.

teams: kavi and jax vs. quint; blaikie was playing with her soccer ball.

after a few minutes Quint asked Blaikie to come play. (read: teenager invites his elementary aged sister to join his team, mother tears up with joy) She was scared, intimidated, resistant. She didn’t know what to do. She said “What do I do?”

He said “just run behind me.”

when the play started, he gave her the ball,  held off the opposition, and shielded her so she could run behind him safely.

This made me think about how God goes before us. When we are scared, intimidated, resistant. When we don’t know what to do. When we say “What do I do?” He says, “Just run behind me.”

he gives us the ball, runs ahead, holds off the enemy, shields us and claims the victory.

i don’t think my son was trying to teach this lesson, but i know the Holy Spirit was using Him to teach me… I think I’m gonna just run behind Him.

when you’re “GREAT FULL”, not grateful.

Image

I made a typo today … i wrote great full instead of grateful – ha. then i realized, i really am GREAT because I’m FULL from the conference.

full of new information and ideas.

full of encouragement and excitement.

and so glad that i was able to attend.

i told one of the other participants that i was a children’s creative minister… after a pause she asked “how many people go to your church?” i said “oh, do you think it’s weird that  a church would send a children’s minister to a leadership conference?” she said “yeah”.

that got me thinking…  we all lead someone. so we all need to learn how to do it better. and not just better, but best.

i lead kids. by virtue of that i am also leading parents. in addition, i’m leading our team with jason. and then… i get to lead our volunteers. that’s alot of different relationships, with alot of different needs and nuances. think maybe i needed some leadership training? i think there should’ve been more kidmin….

at this point – yes, we have new things to learn about doing the ministry… but we also really know what we’re doing in many cases. i don’t feel confused about how to plan a service, what software to use, how to tell a bible story, what worship should look like, how to communicate with kids… i get to do that every week….

but leading, yeah, i needed that boot camp. i’m so GREAT because I’m so FULL from what I learned at Christian Leadership Alliance’s 2013 Authentic Leader event.

the photo i’ve attached : I was honored to be a table leader at the CLA women’s leadership summit. these are the names of the women at my table, and the images are to remind me what each woman shared as her personal mission statement. I’m praying for Ginny, Beverly, Barb, Marilyn and Cindy.

Who are you praying for this week? Prayer is crucial. Do it.

the shirt off my back and a recent epiphany

Image

i have seen something that i can’t wait to share.

i love when excellence reigns where God resides.

http://slugsandbugsandlullabies.wordpress.com/2013/04/19/a-co-write-with-jesus-and-john-the-baptist/

My friend, extraordinary singer/songwriter (and more importantly human being) Randall goodgame has wrapped all of his talent, wisdom and knowledge around the inerrant word of God. He has taken some beautiful lessons from God and surrounded them with melody and timing that give them yet a new life… God’s word is a living thing.*

He has honored God with the choice to make an entire album of songs, with scripture-only verses and chorus. And thank the LORD… because it’s freaking awesome.

TWO SHIRTS is a song about serving others. It is about what is really important in eternity. It teaches selflessness, love and sharing. The enchanting melody places it firmly in your mind and heart, where it can change you from the inside out. I’m so thankful to have this song in the hard drive of my mind, to recall when I’m struggling with any of these things, and so grateful that my kids will have it too.

lyrics:

(luke 3:11)

anyone who has two shirts, should share with the one who has none.

anyone who has food should do the same

(mark 9:35)

anyone who wants to be first, must be the very last

and the servant of all, the servant of all

(matthew 6:19-21)

do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth

where moth and rust destroy

where theives break in and steal

store up for yourselves treasures in heaven

for where your treasure is, there your heart will be

*my recent epiphany:

i was talking to a friend about my job. i’m a kids creative minister. i usually say “i get to find as many ways as i possibly can to tell an eternal story that everyone already knows.” what hit me when i was talking to my friend is that the bible really is a living thing. how else could we continue to find new ways to share it’s truths? it’s a mindblowing realization to me.
